Giving Back

Usually the daily Stimuli Scoop is about something fun, cute and new to try.  As the Publisher, today I just have to write from the heart. I am the mother of a 13 year old girl and I can't even imagine the despair and fear that Amanda's family is experiencing right now.

Amanda McPhee is 16 years old. She was last seen in her Brookswood home at 11:30pm on Saturday, June 11th. Amanda is 5'3" tall, weighs 160 pounds, has blond hair and blue eyes and was last seen wearing a black Gortex rain jacket, black track pants with a yellow stripe on the side and black Converse running shoes.

RCMP say this disappearance is very out of character for Amanda. She is a good student who had been studying for exams, she has no known medical conditions and has never disappeared before.

A recent update on the Facebook page says that a group of professional search and rescue member has been formed and the best way for the public to help to to spread the word and share the poster. A Facebook Event Page has been set up to keep people informed and you can download a copy of the missing poster here.

Please post this to your Facebook pages and tell everyone you know. If you have any information please contact the Langley RCMP at 604.532.3200.

We have all heard of bullying, maybe been bullied or worry about our children who could be the target of bullying. On Wednesday, February 23 the Boys and Girls Clubs are asking you to wear pink to symbolize your support during their 4th annual Pink Shirt Day: Bullying Stops Here campaign.

We were inspired by the story behind the campaign as it doesn't originate with an adult, but two youth who took it upon themselves to show support for a younger classmate who was being bullied. These two guys took it upon themselves to take a stand for someone who was being bullied. They purchased 50 discount pink tank tops and spread the word through their friends to wear pink the next day. The bullies were not heard from again and their younger classmate felt like a huge weight had been lifted.

By wearing pink on Wednesday, February 23, you will be letting society know that bullying is not acceptable and must stop here. London Drugs has joined CKNW in supporting the Pink Shirt Day: Bullying Stops Here campaign and have Pink Shirt Day t-shirts available at London Drugs stores across Western Canada. Pink Shirt Day t-shirts are $9.80 and proceeds will be directed to the Boys & Girls Clubs your community.

Usually our Stimuli Scoops are about something that we've found that we think is great.  They are fun and upbeat, but today is very personal.  I have always believed that it is important  to give back to your community and help others.  That's why I've been involved with the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life for the past 3 years and I am excited that Stimuli will be the online media sponsor again this year.

This, my fourth year with the Relay, is a little different.  As I sit here writing this, my husband is in the operating room having surgery to remove what they think is a tumour from his brain.  Scary?  Yes.  But even more scary is the road ahead and the big waiting game to find out what it is.  Will this surgery be the end of this long road or just the middle of an even longer journey?  Only more time will tell.

What I do know is that cancer touches everyone in some way or another.  A friend, a family  member, a co-worker.  Someone you know has been affected.  So where do they go for help?  With a mandate to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back, Relay for Life raises funds to help the Canadian Cancer Society, or CCS,  fund major research projects.  CCS is there to educate people on cancer prevention and help people who are in the middle of their fight.  If you need a ride to your chemo treatments, they have volunteers to take you.  If you need more information on what you are dealing with, their website is full of resources.  They also give support to the caregivers of those who are sick.

This year Stimuli has an even more personal reason to relay and we are asking you to join us in the fight.  Early bird registration is on right now and for only $10 you can join.  Become a team leader by registering online and recruiting some friends and family members to help raise funds.  Can't form your own team?  Join ours by making a donation to help us reach our goal of $2,000.

We must find a cure for cancer so that none of us ever have to hear the dreaded words from a loved one, "I have cancer."  Please join me in the fight.

Thank you
