For the Love of Cardigans

Nov 01, 2011

The cardigan has been a staple in the closets of men and women for decades. Cotton to wool, double-breasted to single fasteners, it is a piece that not only offers functionality, but style and effortless class.

Unfortunately, the cardigan has inherited a somewhat negative connotation over the past couple years, often associated with a preppy style. Thanks to younger generations integrating this piece alongside their skinny ties and hipster tendencies, many men are afraid sporting this look might make them appear as if they’re trying too hard. Well, here’s some news for all you men out there: it looks good when it seems as though you’ve put a couple minutes of thought into your outfit.

The great thing about cardigans is that there is a style for everyone and for every occasion. A cable-knit, double-breasted cardigan for a fall weekend down at the lake or a lighter-weight cashmere for an easy office cover-up, here are a few of my favourite cardigans this fall:

Gap – Contrast Merino Cardigan, $69.95

Banana Republic – Shawl-Collar Three Pocket Cardigan, $98.50

ESPRIT – Cotton Wool Cardigan, $69.65

Roots – Utility Mock Cardigan, $118.00
