Fort Langley Mall Grand Re-opening this Saturday. http://t.co/YOXB8fRV

We may still be a month or so away from flip-flop wearing, umbrella-less, free from winter jackets kind of weather, but the few sunny days Mother Nature blesses us with golden rays and mild temperatures can make many tempted to take out the sandals buried in their closets. Luckily, fashion has provided us with another option: the boat shoe. Inspired by the nautical theme that is continuously repeated every spring, the boat shoe is a great casual option for men wanting to kick off their boots and slip into something more comfortable.

What is great about the boat shoe is its tremendous versatility. Made from sturdy materials such as canvas to sustain their original use as a sailing shoe, boat shoes are incredibly long lasting. They are available in an array of colours to suit many different outfits and tastes, and have now been made available in a variety of styles from slip-on to a dressier leather shoe. Their non-skid soles, usually made of rubber, provide the multi-purpose criteria many men look for in a casual shoe, making them great for working in the yard, running errands in town, or even on casual Fridays at the office.

Unlike most trends that come and go every year, the boat shoe has remained a constant casual staple in a man’s wardrobe. It is due to this shoe’s longevity that many designers have designed boat shoes for every market and price point. Here are a few of my favourites:

Aldo – Broxterman Loafer. A great casual shoe in neutral grey, this shoe is a great introduction to the boat shoe style and can be easily paired with jeans or shorts.
Price: $60.00

Toms – Canvas Classic. Toms have sparked a crazy trend in the shoe world, sharing their positive ethical mission and great shoes with the world. Available in a wide variety of colours and patterns, this shoe will not only make you look good, but feel good about helping someone in need.
Price: $44.00

Spring – Sanislo. This laced, leather version of the boat shoe provides optimum comfort—a rarerity for leather shoes. Its versatile material makes it easy to pair with casual ensembles or dress up a bit for a day at work.
Price: $69.99

Browns – Timberland. A modern twist on the classic style, this high-top version of the boat shoe has a suede exterior and rubber sole, creating a unique dimension to a casual outfit.
Price: $110.00
