  • Kids Gallery
    9:30 am-5:30 pm
    2017/06/01-2017/06/07

The sustainability focused Kids Gallery is all about fun. Check out the latest theme: food!

The Kids Gallery itself is all about interaction. Tossing museum norm on its head, the space is loud and kids are encouraged to touch everything, ultimately learning about sustainability and relating it to their own lives. Picky eaters and junior foodies are now invited to explore green growing and to learn how to reduce food waste.

Illustrated characters Alisha, Blaze and Stella the Jay help kids and their families explore Surrey’s food and farming.  The popular treefort, farmhouse and many interactives will be even further enhanced by food themed interactives, such as:

    • A make believe garden where kids can plant and harvest vegetables, learning about the space required
    • A play greenhouse also open for ‘gardening’ to illustrate the comparison to farms
    • A puzzle in which kids attempt to balance people and food production to build a city that is sustainable

  • Dean Brody
    7:00 pm-9:00 pm
    2017/06/01

    June 1, 2017 – 7:00 pm

    $39.50, $49.50, $69.50

In the midst of an exhilarating album launch, Dean Brody brings his brand new album, Beautiful Freakshow, coast to coast through local media appearances, and country radio listener events, culminating in a special live performance in Toronto, to kick-off the announcement of national tour dates, beginning April 2017.

On the west coast dates, 2015 CCMA Rising Star and reigning BCCMA Female Artist of the Year, Madeline Merlo will perform in advance of Brody taking to the stage, and on the Ontario dates, newly Warner Nashville signed act High Valley will bring fans straight into the headliner. Fun loving, Top 5 Canadian country radio act, James Barker Band will be opening the action-packed show across Canada.

The past year saw Brody take home a JUNO Award for Country Album of the Year, along with 4 CCMA Awards for the top selling digital Canadian country single of all-time, “Bring Down the House”. Beautiful Freakshow is Brody’s sixth album, and it’s one that takes risks and delves outside of the comfort zone of traditional country, with songs such as the progressive title track, featuring a rap vocal from Halifax native Shevy Price, and the mellow reggae vibe invoked from “Beautiful Girl”. And yet, the record manages to simultaneously stay true to what many fans have come to love and expect from Brody, with traditional tracks destined to be classics, such as, “Time”, “8th Day” and “Blueberry Sky”, which features iconic country legend, Vince Gill on the guitar.

      9:30 am-5:30 pm
      2017/06/04-2017/06/10

  • Kids Gallery
    9:30 am-5:30 pm
    2017/06/04-2017/06/10

  • Kids Gallery
    9:30 am-5:30 pm
    2017/06/04-2017/06/10

  • Lunch At Allen’s
    All day
    2017/06/12
Lunch At Allen’s is a musical powerhouse of four remarkable Canadian talents: Murray McLauchlan, Cindy Church, Marc Jordan and Ian Thomas. As individuals, they have written for or sung on over 25,000,000 cds, penning hits for Josh Groban, Chicago, Bonnie Raitt, America, Santana, Cher and Rod Stewart, as well as Murray’s “Farmer’s Song,” Marc’s “Marina Del Rey” and Ian’s “Painted Ladies”, just to name a few. These artists have come together adding the incredible voice of Cindy Church (Quartette, Great Western Orchestra) to form Lunch At Allen’s. Their stage show is intimate and humourous, featuring many songs familiar to anyone who has turned on a radio in the past two decades.

“You would be hard pressed to find another Canadian ensemble with more collective depth of influence over Canada’s musical landscape than Lunch At Allen’s.” – The Beat Magazine.

    Date & Time: June 14, 2017 (3:30 PM – 5:30 PM)

Purpose: To adjudicate appeals for minor variance to the Zoning Bylaw and rule on applications as set out in Section 899 of the Local Government Act (RSBC 1996 c.323 Part 26, Division 6).

Municipalities are obligated to establish a Board of Variance (BOV) pursuant to the Local Government Act (RSBC 1996 c.323 Part 26, Division 6). The Board functions as an independent decision making body, with limited powers.

Boards of Variance can grant minor variances to the Zoning Bylaw and other rulings as set out in the Act. The variance must be justified by the presence of “undue hardship” as determined by the board. This hardship must be as a result of aspects of the site, rather than those which are person to, or generated by, the owner. Financial hardship or loss of an amenity is unlikely to be considered a sufficient reason on its own. For more information on BOV powers, readers may wish to refer to the Act itself.

Prior to making a decision, a notice will be sent to adjacent property owners who have the right to support or oppose the appeal. In considering its decision, the Board will consider whether the variance or exception would result in an inappropriate development of the site; adversely affect the natural environment; substantially affect the use and enjoyment of adjacent land; or defeat the intent of the Bylaw. BOV rulings cannot vary permitted uses or density. A decision of the Board is final. Please note that the Board’s ruling will expire if not acted upon in accordance with the Act.

Prospective applicants should be aware that City Council is also capable of approving By-law amendments or variances. City Council’s decision-making authority is much broader than the BOV. All major variances and changes to use or density should be processed through City Council, not the BOV.
