Remember that ad where the woman said she wasn’t going to age gracefully, but was going to fight it every step of the way? Guess what? It’s the same thing. You can age gracefully while fighting the signs. According to Marion Brand, of Brand Fitness, it comes down to moving your body.
Yep – as much as you might have hoped for a different answer, the best medicine to slow aging is to move your body. You probably groaned when you read that and I understand why. For many, starting and maintaining a fitness routine can be a little daunting, but here’s the great news: it really doesn’t take much AND once you start, you’re going to crave doing it because it feels great.
“I go by the saying “move it or lose it” and this is true at any age. I’ve seen some very young people in declining health due to poor choices. Your health will decline if you are not keeping active. Stopping the movement is the trigger to aging.”
It doesn’t take a huge time commitment to slow the aging the process down, in fact, for some, movement helps to reverse things. Start with exercising two times a week for 15 minutes. Work your way up to longer periods of time and more times a week. Ideally, you want to strive for four times a week at about 30 minutes per session.
Those people who say find what you love to do and do it are right! Don’t go thinking you have to run if you hate running. Find a dance class, take a bike ride, walk the dog, see a trainer to learn about options or try something new like dragon boating or kayaking. We live in a part of the world where you can get outside many days of the year.
Mix up weight bearing, cardiovascular and flexibility exercises within your routine and ask a Functional Aging Specialist for help if you don’t know where to start.
“One of my favourite tips is to find a buddy or group with similar goals and starting points. This can be so motivating.”
Aging gracefully is more about attitude than anything else. Inside you feel young, but you begin to notice the changes on the outside. With a healthy diet and fitness as part of your routine, you’ll keep that mind young and the body will maintain its youth as well.
